Lapland is a vast region stretching across northern Finland (about a third of its total area), Norway, Sweden and the Kola Peninsula in Russia. It is as large as Belgium, Switzerland and the Netherlands combined and is inhabited by the S\u00e1mi people.<\/p>\n

As most of this region lies above the Arctic Circle, the differences in daylight hours between summer and winter are extreme. Depending on the season, you may experience the midnight sun or the northern lights. In fact, during summer (mid-May to July), the sun does not set. In contrast, during winter, daylight is limited to about four hours, which creates the perfect conditions for seeing the northern lights, especially between November and March.<\/p>\n

The aurora borealis, this region's most famous attraction, is a truly unique phenomenon that has captivated mankind for millennia. Scientifically speaking, this event takes place when electrically charged particles from the sun collide in the earth's atmosphere: the colour of the lights depends on the type of gas particles involved. Mystically speaking, the Sami people believed that these lights were the souls of the dead and you were not supposed to dance or sing for fear that they would feel disrespected and take you to the afterlife. The Vikings, on the other hand, believed that the lights were the valkyries that carried fallen soldiers to meet Odin, their chief god.<\/p>\n\n\t\t<\/div>\n\t<\/div>\n
