The island is shaped like a long, slender crocodile, its landscape ranges from mountains and valleys to hills and beaches. The western part of the island is an exquisitely beautiful rural world of farms, forests and the main tobacco-growing and cigar-making region, offering ample opportunities for hiking, bird-watching, mountain biking, diving and cave exploration. The central provinces, meanwhile, are expansive regions of sugar cane plantations and cattle ranching. In the east, you'll find impressive mountain ranges and white-sand beaches. Its preserved coral reef is second only to Australia's Great Barrier Reef in length.
