The country's name derives from its desert, the Namib, a surreal landscape comprising ossified tree trunks at Sossusvlei, sand sea and endless perfectly formed sand dunes floating out to sea on the Skeleton Coast, where shipwrecks, whale shelters used by the San and ghost towns stretch along the coast: as a human being, you almost feel completely insignificant in the face of nature. These reddish dunes are over 230 metres high, among the highest in the world and one of the driest areas in the world. When you move inland, you'll discover a spine of mountains, the Naukluft Mountains, Brandberg, Spitzkoppe, Damaraland and the amazing Fish River Canyon that runs the length of the country and creates a fantastic landscape. In short, it is an explorer's dream travel destination. There really aren't many African countries that can match the natural beauty of Namibia.
